Ingredients

Cake
  • 1 ¾ cups all-purpose flour
  • ¾ cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 2 cups granulated sugar
  • 1 ½ tsp baking powder
  • 1 ½ tsp baking soda
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 2 large eggs room temperature
  • 1 cup whole milk or buttermilk
  • ½ cup vegetable oil
  • 2 tsp vanilla extract
Frosting
  • 1 cup unsalted butter room temperature
  • ¾ cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 3 cups powdered sugar sifted
  • ¼ cup milk or cream

Method

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two round baking pans.
  2. Whisk together flour, cocoa powder, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, and salt in a large bowl.
  3. Mix eggs, milk, vegetable oil, and vanilla extract until smooth.
  4. Combine wet and dry ingredients; stir until just blended—do not overmix.
  5. Pour batter evenly into prepared pans and bake for 30-35 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean.
  6. Cool cakes in pans for about ten minutes before removing to wire racks. Once cool, prepare frosting and frost as desired.

Notes

For an extra tender crumb, use buttermilk instead of regular milk. Ensure powdered sugar is sifted for a smooth frosting.
