Cake
  • 1 ½ cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • ½ teaspoon baking soda
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ½ cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 large egg
  • ½ cup brewed coffee, cooled
  • ½ cup buttermilk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
Caramel Sauce
  • 1 cup brown sugar, packed
  • ½ cup unsalted butter
  • ¼ cup heavy cream
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Pinch salt
  • 2 tablespoons brewed coffee
  • 1 tablespoon powdered sugar

Method
 

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour a 9×9-inch pan.
  2. Whisk dry ingredients. Beat butter and egg, add coffee, buttermilk, and vanilla. Mix in dry ingredients.
  3. Bake for 25-30 minutes. Cool 10 minutes, then transfer to wire rack.
  4. Combine brown sugar, butter, and heavy cream. Simmer 3-4 minutes, stirring frequently.
