Method
- Cook the penne in salted boiling water for 8-9 minutes until al dente. Drain, reserving ½ cup of pasta water.
- If using meat, brown it in a skillet over medium heat until cooked through, then drain excess grease.
- Mix cooked pasta, marinara, meat (if using), seasonings, and some pasta water in a bowl.
- Layer half the mixture in a greased baking dish, sprinkle with half the cheese, then repeat. Bake at 375°F (190°C) for 20-25 minutes until bubbly and golden. Rest for 5 minutes before serving.
Notes
Feel free to add extra herbs or cheese for more flavor.
