Ingredients

  • 3/4 cup unsalted butter *
  • 1 cup packed light brown sugar
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 large egg + 1 large egg yolk egg at room temperature
  • 1 tablespoon pure vanilla extract
  • 1 3/4 cup all-purpose flour
  • 3/4 teaspoon baking soda
  • 3/4 teaspoon kosher salt more flaky sea salt for sprinkling
  • 1 1/2 cups semi sweet chocolate chips or roughly chopped chocolate

Method

  1. Brown the butter in a saucepan over medium-low heat, stirring frequently, until golden brown with a nutty aroma, about 5-7 minutes. Let cool slightly.
  2. Mix the browned butter, brown sugar, and granulated sugar in a large bowl. Add the egg, egg yolk, and vanilla, mixing well.
  3. Add the flour, baking soda, and salt, folding until no streaks of flour remain. Fold in the chocolate chips.
  4. Chill the dough in the fridge for at least 1 hour. Preheat the oven to 350°F and line baking sheets with parchment paper.
  5. Scoop the dough into 1 ½ ounce portions, spacing 2 inches apart on the baking sheets. Bake for 12-13 minutes, or until lightly golden brown.
  6. Remove from the oven, sprinkle with flaky sea salt if desired, and let cool slightly before serving.

Notes

For the best flavor, use high-quality chocolate and real vanilla extract. Letting the dough rest overnight enhances the flavor.
